  • Alex Rodr’guez Toscano thought he had prepared himself well to compete in the 21st century. For five years, the economics major studied hard in university, taking the most complicated mathematics courses and polishing the three foreign languages he speaks. But after graduating in February 2011, Rodriguez discovered that even those desirable qualifications mean little in todayÕs distressed global economy. After sending 88 resumes to investment firms, banks, any organization that might require some economics research, he hasnÕt gotten a single offer. The tattoo on his back was done while interning in Chile last year.

The lost generation

Youth unemployment rates are skyrocketing worldwide these years. From Madrid to Manila, Seattle to Santiago, the global economy is failing to provide good job opportunities for college graduates and others entering the global workforce for the first time. The International Labour Organisation figures that 75 million people aged 15 to 24 are unemployed globally – or two out of every five jobless.
